Korogiannakis Alexander

A craftsman and artist together, Korogiannakis was born in Megara in 1906. He studied painting and engraving at the Athens School of Fine Arts with professors Iakovidis, Geraniotis, Thomopoulos and Nikos Lytras. He graduated in 1929. Since then he has been systematically engaged in engraving and became one of the first known engravers in Greece, however he continues to be engaged in painting. He started working as a cartoonist, first in the newspaper "Patris" (1929-1934) and then in "Ethnos" (1931-1939). At the same time he participated in all the exhibitions of the Cartoonists Association.

In 1939 he was hired by the Bank of Greece in the banknote design department. As part of this work, he was trained in copperplate engraving techniques at the National Bank of Austria, with two trips to Vienna (1939 and 1949-1950). In the Bank he continued with dignity the work of another important Greek artist, Michael Axelos, from whom he was influenced in both the realistic and expressionist depiction of his subjects in most of his work.
