Christoforou John

John Christoforou (London 1921 - Paris 2014) was a Greek painter who lived most of his life in France.

He was born in 1921 in London to parents from Smyrna. A few months after Christoforos's birth, his mother died and he settled in Athens in 1930 with his father, who also died two years later. In 1935 he studied for a short time at ASKT and in 1938 he returned to Britain. During World War II he served in the RAF. After 1946 he devoted himself to painting studying exhibits from important British galleries and in 1949 he held his first solo exhibition in London. In the following years he lived between London and Paris until 1956 when he settled permanently in the French capital, acquiring French citizenship in 1990. He has had several solo and group exhibitions in countries such as France, Britain, Denmark and Greece. Gained recognition in the mid-1960s, he collaborated for many years with the Rive Gauche Gallery and in 1965 was awarded the AICA Prize. He died in early February 2014 in Paris
